Residents of Vic West, Ash and Ali share their Victoria housing story.
We are discouraged to think moving outside this great city, might be our only affordable option.
What's your home like?
Our home life is super cosy! We rent a basement suite within a beautiful character home in Vic West. We love Victoria. Maybe as a coping strategy, for the confined space, we treat the whole city as our imaginary living room.
How do you earn a living?
We both have rewarding careers. I'm in upper management with Thrifty Foods. My wife Ali, is a social worker with Ministry of Children and Family Development. We are actively saving up and would like to purchase a home to start a family in.
We were attracted to Victoria, mainly because I was raised here. The mountains, ocean and lakes are a part of me. I can’t help but miss them, when work trips take me away. Ali grew up on the mainland and fell in love with the convenience of life and the commute times (or lack there of).
Describe your ideal neighbourhood.
The neighbourhood we would like to live in has life, culture and good food. We only need to drive, for work. We like walking or cycling to complete errands, enjoy meals around town, or hit the gym.
Any housing struggles you would like to share?
Finding a place to rent was a real challenge. With supply so low and demand high, rental rates were consuming such a large portion of our income, especially while we paid our wedding off. For two years now, we've been budgeting aggressively while juggling student debt, in hopes of affording a down payment for our own home. As we pursue our dreams to start a family, finding a home with a second bedroom and parking is important to us.
